The Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, Virginia, shelters some of the Smithsonian’s largest aircraft and spacecraft, including a Concorde jet and the Space Shuttle Discovery—nearly 8 million visitors and aviation enthusiasts visit the Center every year.
The facility’s Boeing Aviation Hangar, which houses many of the museum’s pieces, is the length of three football fields and reaches a height of 10 stories.
The hangar’s aging roofing membrane needed repair to continue protecting the museum’s valuable aviation artifacts. But before work could begin, the workers required safe access to the roof’s curved exterior.
To have access to all parts of the museum’s roof, the general contractor needed a scaffolding system that could match the contour of the barrel-shaped hangar. Scaffolding Solutions, with its longstanding reputation for technical and creative know-how, was a perfect fit for the job.
Cost and schedule were important for the Center’s roofing repair project, but one of the biggest concerns was ensuring workers could access all parts of the curved roof—and doing so, safely.
The challenges Scaffolding Solutions faced included the building’s massive size and its exposed, airfield-like setting. The scaffolding on the museum’s exterior would be subjected to high wind loads because of its open location. Gusting wind could cause lateral force problems, especially considering the complexity of the scaffolding’s shape, which had to match the contours of the hangar’s roofline.
Additionally, Scaffolding Solutions had to maintain site security in order to protect the public during scaffolding construction and repair work.
The Scaffolding Solutions team approached the highly complex design of the Udvar-Hazy Center using the standard components of a StepUp OCTO ® Scaffolding System. They adapted the StepUP OCTO® safety locking features in unique and innovative ways to create a system for the museum’s roof.
To address concerns regarding high wind loads, Scaffolding Solutions fashioned customized lateral supports that met OSHA safety requirements as well as the International Building Code for scaffold strength and stability.
And, to ensure all project activities were finished on-time and on-budget, a detailed milestone schedule was created and shared with project members before work commenced.
The customer was impressed with Scaffolding Solutions’ innovative design. As required, the system tightly hugged the hangar’s curved roofline while providing safe worker access during the roofing membrane repairs.
Having demonstrated their skills and expertise on the building’s exterior, Scaffolding Solutions was awarded additional responsibilities assisting inside the facility. The new scope of work included constructing interior overhead protection for museum visitors.
